There was a public house on the hump back bridge on Kilton Road, and was kept by Mr & Mrs Probert.

Entrance to the pub was by steps directly from the road.

There was a small bar where drinks were bought and the seating was scrubbed, bleached chairs and stools. The tables were also wooden and scrubbed white.

The ceiling was low and the lighting not good.

The floor was covered with sawdust which was swept up each evening and spitoons were cleaned.

at the other side of the road directly opposite was the worksop and retford brewery so it was not a long job to get fresh supplies

Originally known as The Boat the pub was renamed The Royal George. I'm not sure when this happened but possibly mid 1800's. Regarding the previous post the Brewery buildings opposite the pub were the stables and workshops, the Brewery itself was situated over the Bridge where the rather unsightly warehouse now stands. My Father retired in1960 after spending most of his working life there as a brewer. My mothers family owned the corner shop now known as the Priory Stores until 1964 when my two Aunts retired.
