A fascinating book on the history of the Rylands

By Carole White

An everyday story of the Rylands Community

This is a book filled with pictures and stories of life in The Rylands, before, during and after the Second World War.  My parents left me with photographs and information about the area where I grew up.  These items were put away in a drawer until three years ago, when I realised that with everything in a drawer, no one could share the memories.  I would often get into discussions about the Rylands in times gone by, and eventually decided to open the drawer and start compiling this book.  Other people contributed their stories and experiences, and I also did some research in the local library and in the archives of the Beeston and District Local History Society.

Review:

"It is fascinating reading about the history of our local area and the photos are superb.  All in all, it is a very professional-looking book.  Congratulations." (Local headteacher)

"I particularly liked the many photographs you have collected on what was previously an under-documented area." (Local librarian)

Hello, I went to live in Beeston Rylands when I was 6 years old in 1945.  I would love to purchase the two booklets Memories of Beeston Rylands. There is a school photograph in there and I may be in it, also my father was the  school photographer so it is likely that he took it.  I seem to remember that the head mistress was Mrs Somerville and my teacher was Mr Sanderson. My class were taken on holiday to North Wales with Mr Sanderson  and his wife and baby daughter, I am sure I still have photographs of that. Is Bill Newton still alive and well, and could he help me to acquire copies of these two booklets? Thanking you, Pamela Daniels (nee Johnson)

I am following up on Pamela's comments regarding Bill Newton's books. I lived in Meadow Road from when I was born (1955) until we moved to Norfolk in 1967. I would love to track down Bill Newton's books if possible - I have tried his email address but I wonder, from Pamela's comments, if he may no longer be using it? I have happy memories of growing up in Beeston Rylands, and had happy times at Trent Vale Infants school and Rylands Junior School. I wonder if anyone reading this was at Rylands during the mid-60s? I left in 1967, having taken the 11 plus. Friends were off to Bramcote Hills but I headed south to Norfolk. It would be interesting to compare memories and I do hope I can track down Bill's books. Many thanks. Caroline Linsdell (nee Teague.)

Head teacher was Miss Summerskill and I don’t remember any male teachers at the Rylands School until 1948/9 when the headship was taken over by Mr V T Crompton. My first teacher in 1944 was Miss Underwood.
