Notts alabaster columns at Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire

The columns in the Great Hall at Kedleston in Derbyshire are of ivory white alabaster, veined with grey and dark red.

This alabster, says George Fellows*, came from a quarry in Nottinghamshire, at Red Hill at Ratcliffe-on-Soar, where the River Trent is joined by the Soar.
