QUESTION: This building was once used as a printer's shop.  What famous things were printed here?

Clue: Look for a plaque on the side of the building by the big white door  (Some more information about this is contained in the 'Documents' section at the bottom of this page)

QUESTION: Who was Lord Byron.  Where did he live in Nottinghamshire?

You may need to use an encyclopaedia to find this out

Further point(s) for discussion

Look at the windows high up on the Bridge street side of the building.  Some are not windows at all, but just painted on (See picture below).  Why is this?  It is often suggested that this was to avoid paying Window Tax.

Use an encyclopaedia to find out about the Window Tax

  • Do we still have the Window Tax today?
  • What things do we pay taxes on?
  • What is the money raised through taxes used for?

There are many other buildings around Newark which have these 'blind' windows.  Perhaps children in your class can spot others as they walk around town.  Click HERE for some that we have spotted, and which could be used as a resource for another lesson.
