Rufford Abbey, the principal seat of the Saviles

Twitter Diary of a Georgian Spinster

By Ruth Imeson

Gertrude Savile (1697-1758) was a Georgian lady who never married. She was the sister of Sir George Savile, seventh baronet and MP. The principal residence was at Rufford Abbey, with the family often travelling to the capital for the London season.

Gertrude’s diary is an intensely personal affair, referring to the South Sea bubble, the Beggar’s Opera, the difficulty of retaining good servants, and the increasingly fraught relationship with her mother.

The original diary is preserved at Nottinghamshire Archives (ref: DDSR 212/10/1-12).
