Description of event

Since the early 1980s, Retford's Morris dance teams have been celebrating the ancient tradition of meeting up just before dawn on the first day of May to welcome in the first summer sunrise with song and dance on the top of the remains of Laxton's motte and bailey castle. In the 20th century it was Broadstone Morris men who performed - an all men's side performing the familiar Cotswold style. But since its formation in 2002, Rattlejag Morris, a mixed side who have revived dances based on its own research into the rural traditional dances of Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire, have organised the May-time revels. As the site is not usually accessible, it is quite a privilege to be given permission for yet another year to invite the public to join the team - the dawn celebrations are followed by barbecued butties, beer and hot drinks too and the sun has rarely failed to appear over the horizon on the day. If you are thinking of coming along, wear sturdy clothing and be thoughtful of the villagers still asleep when arriving and departing. The field in which the castle mound is sited is up the track opposite the church (NG22 0NX), then through the gateway by the bend, and northwards across the field.
