Matthews shop was located on the south west corner of Bridge Street, where it joined the Market Place.

The photograph across the Market Place (c.1880s) clearly shows the building directly behind the street lamp.

From available local Trade Directories we find the following entries which trace the history of the firm:-

 1853 - No entry

1864 - Thomas Matthews, Woollen draper, Bridge Street

1869 - Mrs Ann(a) Maria Matthews, linen & woollen draper, 13 Bridge Street

1872 - ditto

1881 - ditto

1885 - Mrs Anna Maria Matthews & Son (John Leevers) tailors & outfitters, 13 Bridge Street

1892 - Matthews & Son, 13 Bridge Street

1912 - Matthews & Son, Bridge Street (NB Newark streets were re-numbered in the 1890s)
