The finding of four unlabelled images on large sheets of photographic film amongst the effects left by Newark-born Charles Henry Allen prompted research to try identifying where and when they had been taken. Though with a long-standing interest in photography, Charles was an engineer during most of his working life and is highly unlikely to have taken the original photos. It was hoped that research may uncover clues to explain how he came to have these images but that currently remains a mystery.

Curiously these images were positive, not negative, and all showed scenes of major flooding. Two show the same collapsed bridge taken with slightly different exposures. This scene has been identified, by Chris Copp of Staffs. Museums at Shugborough, as the Cavendish bridge at Shardlow, Derbyshire which suffered severe damage during the winter of 1947.

Having determined that they relate to Derbyshire, these images have been offered to that County’s archive. However, the story of that winter, its effect upon the people of Nottinghamshire and including the disruption of north-south traffic due to the collapse of the Cavendish bridge, is told vividly through the following headlines of the Nottingham Evening Post, along with occasional extracts from the newspaper’s columns.

RISE OF TRENT
Thaw Spreading Over Britain
The River Trent, following the return to milder weather conditions, is on the rise, but there is no immediate danger of any floodings the “Post” is informed.
At 10 a.m. the height of the river was 69 ft. 11 ins. above the summer datum level, representing a rise of 13 inches since noon yesterday. This is not unusual for the time of the year, and an official of the River Trent Catchment Board went so far as to say, “The river is very low indeed.”
A quick thaw, however, could bring about a radical change and those people living in the flood areas have an anxious week ahead.
