Rare Event At Fiskerton

Fiskerton Station

By Peter Bowler

On Sunday 9th of November and again on Saturday 6th of December 2014 a steam hauled express passed through Fiskerton station, the locomotives were No 46115 Scots Guardsman from St.Pancras to Lincoln and the other was No.4965 Rood Ashton Hall from Tyesley to Lincoln respectively. These trains have run at this time of the year for several years, probably the only steam hauled trains on the line since the end of steam in the mid 1960s.

Happy days!

Not sure when the signalbox at Fiskerton was demolished but in 1996 I was offered a job on the local line between Nottingham and Newark. Being six years down the line in railway terms, I was accepted immediately and began stage two on quite a long road/ career within various posts and departments.

Fiskerton Station was one of several boxes on my patch. One autumn evening, with lots of fog about, a Crab locomotive passed me at Fiskerton with barely a murmur. She was pulling a train from Newark but I haven't found out where she was going to end up.

My first and last steam encounter within that particular job except for viewing Blue Peter standing at signals at Lock Lane Crossing some years ago.

Blocking road traffic from both approaches into the bargain.
