Memories

OurNotts has been contacted by a reader who is looking for more information about Staythorpe Power Station on the banks of the River Trent near Newark.  He writes -

I have a memory of attending a dinner at the power station when I was a (very) young boy.  It would have been around 1948 - 1949 when I was aged 6.

I was taken to by my father, whose cousin worked for Balfour Beatty.   I assumed that the occasion was to mark the opening ceremony, but think it must have been the handover by BB to the installer of the generation equipment. My mother described my father's cousin as a foreman, but I think he must have been rather higher than that to wangle the invitation for us to attend.

It must have been before May 1949 as we moved from Mansfield to Kent in that month, which put me at the age of 6 3/4 so quite an event for a little lad, especially when I was lifted up onto the footplate of one of the shunting engines.

Does any of this ring any bells with anyone? I have a vague recollection of there being a photographer in attendance, presumably from the “Newark Advertiser” newspaper, and if a photo were to exist, that would be marvellous.

If you can help with this at all, I would be very appreciative, if only to prove that this is not just a dream.  If so, please could you leave a message via the 'Add a Comment' tab below.  Thank you.

I collected some info from local newspapers about the building of Staythorpe 1946-1950.  Looking through the pieces I've got there is unfortunately nothing for the Jan-May period of 1949.  The best I can do is that the Newark Herald made a visit to the station in July 49, there was a brick-laying ceremony of the power station chimney in August 49, a transformer arrived in Oct 1949, Turbine testing Dec 49, with the power station being reported ready for the switch-on at the very end of 49
