Miss Sylvia Lake Armstrong was born in Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire, in 1917, in a house called ‘Culloden’.
She studied at the Mansfield County School of Art and later at the SladeSchool in London. Here she was awarded the Slade Diploma in Fine Art.
She became known as a painter of landscapes, portraits and wood engraving illustrations, exhibiting works at the London Portrait Society, the Society of Women Artists, and at NottinghamCastle art gallery.
She was commissioned to paint various portraits of leading citizens in the Nottingham and Mansfield area.
In his book Artists and Sculptors of Nottinghamand Nottinghamshire 1750-1950, Henry C. Hallnoted that, by 1953, she was Art Mistress at the Essex County Technical school. Her residential address was given as Springwell House, Kegwoth, near Derby.
