The Major Oak

The "Major Oak" is so named after after Major Hayman Rooke, the antiquary who is said to have first described its virtues in print*.
The tree stands in Birkland and is today the principal feature associated with the Sherwood Forest Country Park.
The hole in the trunk is said to be large enough to accommodate a dozen persons at once, although today, to conserve the tree, access is not permitted.
Its statistics are impressive. Overall height is around 70ft., whilst at 4ft from the ground, the trunk measures 29ft. 6ins. Its branches have a spread of 90ft.
