Collieries of Bassetlaw

Interesting pavement art in Worksop

The piece takes the form of a map of the Bassetlaw district, laid out in the pavement close to the new Worksop public library on Memorial Avenue.

Each colliery is depicted by a stylised symbol of pit-head winding gear with the dates of the opening and closure of the colliery spelled out.

Those listed are
Steetley Colliery  1873 - 1983

Shireoaks Colliery 1854 - 1989

Firbeck Colliery 1925 - 1970

Manton Colliery 1898 - 1994

Bevercotes Colliery 1953 - 1993

Harworth Colliery 1919 -

The artwork is signed 'KS KevI 1999', and this explains why no date for the closure of  Harworth is given on the artwork - Haworth did not close until 2013.
