Barnby Moor, Ye Olde Bell Hotel on the Great North Road, 1961

Some descriptions of the village from early county histories and guide books

"It is almost impossible to learn anything either very definite or very interesting about this little hamlet, which lies on the Great North Road, and boastsof a large hotel, whose fortunes are reviving in these days of motor cars.

"When Barnby belonged to to the Prory of Blyth all this district was wild moorland and doubtless a happy hunting ground for footpads and 'gentlemen of the road'".
