RANDLE, A (of Sutton-in-Ashfield) Absalom Randle Private 12673 7th Bn Leicestershire Regiment Absalom Randle died on 27th July* 1916 aged 20 years and was buried in the Heilly Station Cemetery, Merricourt – L’Abbe, Somme, France.
He was born c1896 at Stonebroom, Derbyshire and was the son of Absalom and Mary Randle. At the time of Absalom’s death the family were living at 4, Carsic Lane, Sutton and they later moved to 106, Kirkby Road , Sutton-in-Ashfield. He was the younger brother of Thomas Randle who is also remembered on the Sutton Cemetery War memorial.
This is a report that appeared in the Notts Free Press dated 18th August 1916:- PRIVATE A RANDLE Mr & Mrs Randle of 4, Carsic Lane, Sutton, who lost one son at the front in October last, have now undergone another great loss in their son, Private Absalom Randle 12673 7th Leics. Previously employed at Brierley Hill Colliery, Private A Randle enlisted on August 28th 1914 and went to France in July 1915. His death took place on July 22nd. From the sister-in-charge of No 36 Casualty Clearing Station Mr & Mrs Randle have received the following letter: I am grieved to tell you of the death of your son Private A Randle. He was admitted to this hospital on the 13th suffering from a wound of the abdomen. The doctors operated at once which was his only chance. The internal injuries were very severe and one of his kidneys had to be removed. He seemed like doing well the first two days but after that his condition became less satisfactory and in spite of all we could do he gradually sank passing away very peacefully at 2.30pm today. He was very good and patient in his illness. He will be buried by the chaplain in the military cemetery attached to this camp.
