Some descriptions of the village from early county histories and guide books
Writing in 1910, Everard L. Guilford in his guide to Nottinghamshire (London: Methuen) commented that Besthorpe "is worth visiting on account of the Fleet, a large sheet of water due originally to the vagaries of the Trent at this point".
"The scene is not dissimilar to many in the [Norfolk] Broads, and will please artists".
