Girls' Friendly Society in wartime Newark

[were]... alternately devoted to shirt and sock making for our troops, and to instructions in the first principles of Red Cross Work, as most ably set forth by Miss Hallowes.... [And] to judge by the roomful of girls, bending, bright young faces above gussett and seam... [it]... has been a labour of love as well as a duty.
