Beeston Square's strangest work of art

By Alice Cave

It cost £25,000, and was designed as a water sculpture, but when it was unveiled in 1989, Beestonians were not generally impressed.  There was a health scare regarding a similar piece of art (the leaf stem sculpture in Nottingham) at around the time the sculpture was erected.  Officials were called in to test for bacteria in the running water.  Does anyone know for how long water ran down the sculpture in Beeston Square?

Its designer was then head of sculpture at North Staffs Polytechnic, Paul Mason.
