Sir Stephen Gibson was born 12th May 1887, only son of George Gibson of Rempstone near Loughborough.  In 1927 he married Jessie Wilhelmina Blyth ARRC, youngest daughter of Professor James Blyth MA, LLD.

Sir Stephen was educated at High Pavement School, Nottingham and Emmanuel College Cambridge.

He was Managing Director of the Iraq Petroleum Company, and associated companies 1950 - 1957.

President of the Institute of Petroleum 1952 - 1954.

In 1947 he was awrded the Redwood Medal, and in 1961 the Cadman Medal.

In 1956 he was made a Knight of St. John of Jerusalem, and in the same year an Officer of the Legion of Honour.

He died in 1964 (?), at which time his home was at Manor Farm, Halam
