Can anyone help, please

Welbeck Abbey - hunting lodge??

By Martin Ballance

This picture was emailed to us at OurNottinghamshire with the following query: I'm not a resident of Nottinghamshire, so am hoping someone might be able to tell me where and what this photo is of.  I thinks its Nottinghamshire and its been suggested that it may be the Duke of Portand's hunting lodge in Welbeck Park or Sherwood Forest.  Can anyone help, please?

Hi Martin! The Russian Hut or Log Hut as it was called locally was in the Birklands, no nails were used in it's construction only dowels,if you follow the A6075 road from Woodhouse to Edwinstowe and pass Warsop Windmill junction about 200 yds after the junction before the end of the large trees there is an old gateway[used to be white gates] turn left into Birklands towards Budby for about 3/4 of a mile and it was on the right hand side. It was demolished about 1954 ish. The toilet block was a miniture version of the house and there was a beaters hut also there. The Army had it during WW2 when the ammunition dumps were in Birklands. It is on some Ordnance survey maps but if you look for little Blackpool[a small pond] that was in the vicinity. I remember playing in there just after the war. There is loads of info on the Warsop and Edwinstowe local history groups' websites.
