Arthur Mee

"A million words a year!"

Mention the name 'Arthur Mee', and it is amazing how many people begin to reminisce about the set of encyclopedias they used to own when they were young.  Full of facts, these books are entertaining even today.   There’s a full set of the encyclopedias at Stapleford library, on display with other books he wrote or edited.

The 1871 Education Act gave Arthur the chance to make something of his life.  He was able to go to school and get a good basic education.  His ambition and dedication got him work at a local newspaper and from thence eventually to prestigious posts in London.
