The unveiling of the Blue Plaque

On a beautifully sunny day in mid March, 2011, a large crowd of people came together to unveil the Blue Plaque commemorating Arthur Mee.  Present for the initial speeches in the Arthur Mee Centre were dignitaries, members of historical and civic societies, some students from local schools and the college, and other interested members of the public.  Arthur Mee's nephew was a special guest.  Mr Luckcock and Professor John Beckett spoke about Arthur's childhood influences in Stapleford and his later career.

The portrait of Arthur Mee, recently restored and cleaned, stood in place of honour at the front of the meeting room.  The picture awaits rehanging in Stapleford library.  It is by Frank Salisbury.

Everyone moved outside for the unveiling.

The college and Stapleford library had put on displays about Arthur, his life and works.  The special collection of Arthur Mee books was unlocked for the occasion, and many people came on into the library after the ceremony to have a look at some of his writing and to ask questions about it.
