James Maude & Co of Mansfield working for W.T. Allen of London

Take a look at many an old post box - wherever you are in the UK - and you may see that it was made by "W.T. Allen & Co. London".

The Head Office of this company - the name forged into the post box ironwork - was in London, but the foundry that made the post boxes under contract was in Mansfield in Nottinghamshire.

The company in question was James Maude & Co at the Sherwood Iron Foundry on Forest Road, Mansfield.

Maudes also cast some of the decorative iron lamp standards used for electric lighting which still line the Thames embankment in London today.

The Sherwood Iron foundry close in 2004, the site being now redeveloped for housing.

Do you know of any post boxes in your area by W T Allen?  Or any ironwork stamped Maude or Sherwood Iron Foundry?  If so, why not send us a photo to ournottinghamshire@gmail.com and we will be pleased to include it oj our site.
