Christmas at Clipstone Camp

One hundred years ago

By Pauline Marples

In todays world of commercialism when we are bombarded with advertising and social media relating to Christmas, it is hard to imagine what it was like 100 years ago when the world was at war and thousands of soldiers were stationed at Clipstone Camp near Mansfield.

These two post cards show us that for the soldiers, Christmas was not forgotten. On the reverse the top card says 'This is a photo of our cake & the cooks who made it. Made in shape of a house.'

The bottom card, just says 'For Dear Old Mum', I bet she wept her eyes out on receiving it!
