Football stars

I lived in Waterway St, and had the good fortune to play for Arkwright with Rob Watson, Tristan Benjamin, Frank McGowan, Steve Musson and others.

We struck fear into other teams through skill and teamwork.

I remember arriving at an away game and getting abused by the entire home school as we walked from the bus to the field.

We won, in a cup game as I recall, and the bus ride home felt like a cloud.

I also remember, fondly, Doris Watts, Angela Oliver, Rosemary, Hazel, and Irena, amongst others.

The teachers were on the whole, decent, and I have good memories of the school that I left 50 (!) years ago.

I’ve been away a long time, but never far, in memories.
