Born in 1888, Mr Dimock attended the King Edward VI Grammar School in Retford from age 9, leaving in 1906.  During the years that followed he qualified as a solicitor in the long-established Retford firm of Mee & Co.  Having joined the firm in 1912, Mr. Dimock rose to become, by the time of his death, a senior partner in the business.

Mr Dimock served in two World Wars.  At the time of his death The Retford Times (29th December 1957) recorded:-

"Commissioned in the Sherwood Foresters in 1914, Mr. Dimock was later promoted to the rank of Staff Captain and was on the staff of the General Officer Commanding the 59th Division.

"Later Mr. Dimock was stationed for a time in Ireland during the Sinn Fein troubles.  For his war services, Mr. dimock was awarded an O.B.E. and was also mentioned in dispatches.

"Some 22 years later - about the time of the Dunkirk evacuation in May 1940 - Mr. Dimock once more changed his civilian clothes for military uniform.  This time he was called upon by the late Brigadier-General Sir Joseph F. Laycock, Zone Commander for Nottinghamshire, to form and organise the Local Defence Volunteers in the Retford area.

"Afterwards this force became the 10th Notts. Battallion Home Guard, and Mr. Dimock, with the rank of Lt.-Col., was its first Commanding Officer.

"Mr. Dimock was for many years a vice-president of the Retford branch of the British Legion".
