Coal mining in Nottinghamshire

Mining Trade Union Banners

By David Amos

An amount of coal mining trade union banners still exist in the county. The last time many saw the light of day was during the 1984-85 dispute. The banners used to be displayed in the Annual Gala and Demonstration which took place in Mansfield.  The last meeting of this type took place in the early 1980's.  The collection was photographed in 2008 as part of a project looking into the coal mining heritage of the East Midlands.  For further details see www.mubu.org.uk/miningscholarship

The black and white images show the Annesley NUM Branch Officials and Committee members unveiling their new Branch Banner in January 1984. Within two months the 1984-85 miners strike started.
