Newstead
Newstead in the 18th Century
1809-1811
By Ralph Lloyd-Jones
"as any sensible 21-year old would"
Byron did not move into Newstead until coming of age in 1809, immediately inviting his school and college friends to stay over for big parties, as any sensible 21-year old would. He spent a lot of (borrowed) money in Nottingham on having the Abbey done up with velvet curtains and fine carpets. But since he never repaired the roof, the decorating was all ruined as soon as it rained.
