By Samantha Huff
Born 25th October 1888 in Cropwell Butler. At the time of his death, George's father was living in Nottingham Road, Bingham.
The second child but eldest son of Samuel Henry and Susannah (nee Bull), George had 6 brothers and 3 sisters.
Before enlisting, George, like many of his family, was a farm servant and agricultural labourer. He joined the Household Cavalry on 1st December 1911 and was assigned to the 2nd Life Guards based firstly in Windsor and then Hyde Park in London.
George seems to have been a diligent and hard working soldier, although not one progressing through the ranks. He served for just short of 6 years in several different countries before being killed in action on 15th August 1917.
George William Marriott is sadly one of 72,195 brave souls with no known grave commemorated at Thiepval Memorial near Picardy, France.
