West Bridgford - the most "barred" village in Notts

Toll bars

According to an old edition of 'The West Bridgford Times & Echo' newspaper**, West Bridgford once had the distinction of being the most "barred" village in Nottinghamshire - ie having the greatest number of Toll Gates in its vicinity.

Opposite the Town Arms there was a gate to collect a toll for crossing Trent Bridge into Nottingham, while near to Wilford Lane there was another bar commanding that thoroughfare, Loughborough Road and Melton Road.

Near the end of Rectory Road at at Lady Bay bridge were "side bars", and at Gamston Lane end there was another with gates to guard both roads.

Under Acts of Parliament passed as to Melton Road in 1873, Grantham Road in 1876, and Loughborough Road in 1880, the toll bars were removes
