Trees of Sherwood Forest and area

Revealed in Old Post Cards

By Pauline Marples

If only trees could talk, what would they tell us of the people who have passed by them, climbed them and hidden in their crumbling trunks over hundred of years.

While most of the post cards are unused some do contain messages - only relevant parts have been reproduced.

No 4 'Major' Oak, written 14 July 1904 ' Fourteen of us got inside the 'Major' O [sic] together but we were rather crushed. He had never been so full before.

No 11 Robin Hoods Larder Oak, Welbeck, posted  22 October 1907. A Black and White version of the same card written 14 July 1904 says 'We passed this larder on our way back from Edwinstowe but there was nothing in it.  Note the man at the side of the tree has obviously cycled there.

No 13  Parliament Oak, posted August 1912...'K. John is supposed to have held a Parliament under this Oak.'
